Mic and La Perla 29

This year we open the doors to a new audience that is just premiering in the theatre: children. We will do so with one of the most beloved and iconic characters among the youngest, Mic.

For the past eighteen years, Catalan families have shared the first discoveries of their children alongside Mic, a woolen puppet who has built a connection in many homes through television. At La Perla, we feel a closeness to en Mic's world, his aesthetics speak to us, he has a way of storytelling that resonates with us, and a pedagogical background with which we align from our theatre space.

We like the idea of filling the Teatre La Biblioteca with 3-year-old spectators who make us rediscover ourselves through their gaze. Sharing our way of doing theatre with en Mic's world. Getting closer to the high artistic and pedagogical quality of en Mic and his friends, adding our theatrical perspective. Right now, in rehearsals, and soon in performances… with the team that created the character and the programme of SX3, continuing the commitment to proximity and bringing these two worlds together in harmony.

Peter Brook, who as you know is a great reference for us, explained that the simplicity of the theatrical act is at the core of making cultural action complex. Simplicity at the base of complexity. And simplicity in the figure and human dimension as the measure of all things. Manel and Laia, the creators of en Mic, often say that we must think from small to big; these ideas are not very different. It’s about getting to the root of things, seeking emotions in the simplest actions to understand the complexity of the world. Giving value to every scenic component, using only the essential elements, and letting these activate our imagination, which will fill the stage. The stage made of the imagination of the spectators, of any age.

This simplicity is a constant search for us, and also for en Mic. And the complexity it can take us to goes beyond theatre, just as it has gone beyond television. Because this audience is just starting out in the world, and in a way, we are also starting again, accompanying them. We understand culture as a complex learning experience, a way of seeing and living more realities, of being able to coexist with the diversity of what surrounds us. This is an action that moves us at La Perla, the dialogue between citizens, which takes on different languages depending on age, but retains the background of artistic quality, valuing creativity, freedom, imagination, and diversity as ways of living together.

Therefore, we open the doors of the Teatre La Biblioteca to the youngest members of every home. We invite them with excitement and trust to have a good time with en Mic. And we also invite all of you, adults who are reading these lines, to accompany them and enjoy a family show that returns us to the simplest things in order to coexist with the complex ones.
